Magoo Runner-Up At CBSA Canadian Amateur Championships

CBSA hosted their 2024 Canadian Amateur Championships for 8-Ball and 9-Ball, for Women’s and Men’s,  at The CornerBank in Scarborough, ON from September 18-21.


In Mens 8-Ball Division, Eskasoni’s Clayton “Magoo” Dennis had a stellar 2nd Place finish among 80 entrants.  Magoo won his 6 A-Side matches in the double knockout, races to 7 format.  A 7-4 win over Jay Goyer of Ontario in the A-Side final left him as the lone undefeated player. Magoo’s opponent in the event final would be another Ontarian Abhijeet Deo, whom Dennis had earlier sent to the B-Side. The extended final race went to Deo 9-3, but runner-up is an excellent accomplishment among tough competition.  Congratulations to Magoo.  Other Nova Scotians in the event were Brian White finishing 17-24, Chris Simon and Craig Teal finishing 25-32, Bruce Lilly placing 33-48, Evan Paul, Ryan Kendall, and Wek Augustine coming in 49-64., while Leon Sylliboy placed 65th.




In Men’s 9-Ball Division, among Nova Scotians in the 80 player field, Brian White had a strong . 4th place finish. Bruce Lilly came in 7-8. Craig Teal battled to 13-16. Chris Simon placed 17-24. Clayton Dennis, Leon Sylliboy, Ryan Kendall, and Wek Augustine ended in 33-48, with Evan Paul placing 65th.  The event was won by Sahil Nayyar of Ontario over Don Banks of Ontario 10-6.




In Womens 8-Ball, from a field of 40, Ashley Denny fought to 13-16, while Angie Kilbride and Kim Hobbs were 25-32.  The event was won by Paris Shahsavar of PEI 8-4 over Denise Belanger of Ontario.




The Women’s 9-Ball event had 32 players. Nova Scotia’s best finish was Ashley Denny and Kim Hobbs at 17-24.  Angie Kilbride came in at 25-32.  Suzy Dickstein of Alberta was the overall winner in the final 9-7 over Marie-Noel Lagarde of Quebec.




As a warm up event, CBSA had a Doubles 8-Ball Championship event with 16 pairings entered.  Brian White teamed with Paris Shahsavar to finish 4th.  Ryan Kendall and Wek Augustine were 7th-8th.




Of interest, there were a few other former NS players participating. Christine Tom (Gilgan). , representing BC, had a 4th place finish in Womens 8-Ball.  Charles Pulsifer, ON, played in both Men’s events, having his best finish in 8-Ball at 7th-8th place.  Randy Strong, ON, played 8-Ball and 9-Ball, finishing 17-24 in 8-Ball.  TJ Humber played 8-Ball, placing 33rd.


The event was well run by TD Barry Hetherington, with assistance from Frank Kakouros and John White.  The CornerBank is one of the best pool halls in all of Canada. Awesome staff, awesome food, and a great atmosphere.  Thank you to John White and Jim Wych for hosting the championships.
